Comprehensive Learning Centre

With Aitor Gutiérrez and Patricia Sanz

Zaragoza (Aragón)

The project originates from a new concept of a child development centre. The client is a speech therapist who decided to bring together other professionals from directly related fields -such as educational psychology, graphology, and optometry- to create a space offering a comprehensive learning service. The initial condition of the site is an interior flat with limited light and height, where the challenge is to redistribute the rooms to endow the workspaces with natural light and generate a welcoming and peaceful environment for children, all within a tight budget. Offices are placed around the exterior to utilise the existing external openings. These are connected by a central waiting area with games, receiving light through the glass block walls of the offices and a tensioned illuminated ceiling that simulates natural overhead light. Adjacent to the central area, accessible through a bifold door with paintable chalkboard panels, there is a kitchenette for the staff, which doubles as a meeting and training session room. The materials and colours of the project are determined to complement the furniture and objects each professional will bring to the centre, using easily combinable primary colours that are ready to receive the activities and transformations generated by the users. The walls are clad in smooth white tiles of 15x15 with blue grout, chosen for reasons of cleanliness and economy, and for the translucent freestanding walls, a glass block piece in the same dimension as the tiles is selected, creating a continuous pattern of blue joints. The existing terrazzo floor is covered with a linoleum surface to provide a softer area where the children can play on the floor.
