Forest of Sine Cemetery

The Sine Cemetery is situated on a slope on the outskirts of the municipality of Vence, a village in the Maritime Alps of France, on the Côte d'Azur. Its graves are grouped in dry stone terraces integrated into the topography and sheltered under a dense forest of holm oaks, oaks, pines, strawberry trees, and laurels, which grow in shallow soil from which the limestone forming the mountain protrudes. The project aims to maintain the poetic essence of the place, enhancing concepts and sensations related to the passage of time and the transition of death. It creates a dialogue between the dry and the damp; the enduring stones emerging from the ground are exposed to the sun, protecting the graves, while the damp foliage and ground cover decompose the matter and generate new life. The new 110 graves are placed within the forest, carefully considering the existing trees and undergrowth to preserve them. The stones of these new walls also extend across the ground as if emerging from the mountain itself, just like the drinking fountains are springs that sustain fern vegetation.
